DescriptionThe HOLY CROSS Catholic Church, POERUA. Opened on the 23rd November 1952. This church was built from the dismantled St John the Evangelist Catholic Church from Waitua. I'M LOOKING FOR THE DATE OF THE CLOSING MASS FOR THIS CHURCH, sometime in 1992. Also photos taken inside & out, without the flood waters surrounding the building.
There are photos and articles of this building being dismantled and leaving Waiuta, and newspaper articles of it after it was sold, and being moved along the road on the back of a truck (towards Inchbonnie), it was taken up the hillside and converted into holiday accomodation called The Hidden Valley Lodge. This photo was taken when there was a flood on the 27th January, 1980. (PHOTO CREDIT - Peter Thomas).
A plaque now lies in the farmer's field, on the hill side of the road, and the Rotomanu side of Evan's Creek, with the wording - LAID IN MEMORY OF CATHOLIC FAMILIES OF PORUA< INCHBONNIE & ROTOMANU WHO WORSHIPPED AT HOLY CROSS CHURCH ON THIS SITE 1952-1992 GLORY TO GODMap^[1]ContributorColleen Yee

Dad was part of the team that carried out the move Im not sure if he was working for Rathbuns or Ron McQuin at the time, However the fence from the church ended up at our place in Cobden.

This church was built by my grandfather Richard Marley (Senior) originally from Newcastle in England before settling in Cobden and building the family home at 1 Sturge Street.
