Ours was 307W in the 1940s and changed later to 217J. The letters related to the Morse Code. Anyone ringing us on that party line had to wind the handle to make our phone ring to suit.
One short ring followed by two long ones for W, and we knew to answer it. One short ring followed by three short rings indicated J.
You were supposed to ignore other people’s rings, but many people listened in. Before you could make a call, it was good mannered to ask if the line was busy.
So if you heard a click, you smartly said, ‘Working!’
