Great tops on the Elliot Range. I think I know exactly where this photo is. Arguably you could say it is on the ridge or at the edge of the basin rather than in the basin. It would be the Clarke River behind the helicopter. Harold would be looking toward the basin back in the direction of the Ahaura River. [There is not just one basin but a number of them some of which are unnamed. The two main basins are "Safety" and Trouland.]

James there were two old huts. One was the NZDA one and the other an old Internal Affairs one? Both are long gone with the odd trace to be seen. Both these huts were on the edge of Safety Camp Creek basin with the former above the bushline and the latter in the high bush not far from the scrub and tussock.

Jock Allen as well as Duncan? who also worked in Dobson with Dad,I used to go up on Mount Elliot and into Crane Creek with him and even though I was young and fit( so I thought) he’d start of at a very fast walk and go like that all day,as he was so incredibly fit himself from shovelling coal under ground all week ,he had a frustrating habit of stopping on the track until he could see or hear you coming then he would take off again,he would say after being underground all week hunting was his relaxation,as for food the menu was potatoes,Saveloys ( cooked in the one pot,cans of sardines and bars Energy chocolate for snacks during the day.

Jock Allen Also Duncan Wyllie? I,who would carry out a whole deer sell it and spend the proceeds at TAB,dad would tell him your bloody nuts you’ll wear your self out,well Duncan had his hip joints replaced when he was quite young.LOL
