The caption is utterly incorrect. This photo appeared in The Auckland Weekly News during October 1921 which dates it pretty conclusively. Note that none of the electrification infrastructure to allow the use of the tunnel is in place which quite proves the point; it was erected during the following two years.

Rob Evans No apologies needed Rob, certainly not your error. It's a well-known photo and someone has made a very false assumption. Unfortunately errors like this have a habit of becoming received knowledge and that skews the historical narrative.

My dad travelled by coach on that route with grandad Nicholson on a business trip. My dad’s job was to dress his dad’s boils.
They went to Hoki (Dad saw Mt Cook from roof of Hoki hotel) and Westport and back via the Buller Gorge to ChCh, all by coach except train ChCh to Arthur’s Pass.
