Hi all,
I’m looking for information on Michael Donovan and his family who were based in Okarito and Ahaura 1881-1904. Michael was born around 1846 in Limerick, Ireland and appears to have immigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s having spent some time in the Royal Irish Constabulary.
We know he was a police officer from the mid-1870s until his retirement in 1911. Of particular interest to this group is that his police records indicate he was based in Okarito from 1881 until 1897 and then in Ahaura from 1897 until 1904. As far as we can tell Michael isn’t related to the more famous, store owning, Donovans of Okarito.
He married Anne Kelly in 1880 and together had approximately 9 children, of which a number were born on the West Coast. Sadly two, Charles Parnell Donovan and Patrick William Donovan, died there too. Charles died in 1902 and Patrick in 1912, with both buried in Ahaura. Attached is a photo of Michael and his eldest daughter Ellen 'Nellie' Donovan.
I have a number of newspaper articles from PapersPast which describe things Michael was involved in but I’d be interested if anyone had any further information and/or photos relating to the family’s time in Okarito and Ahaura.

There was a Mrs Donovan teaching in Moana in about 1976,she had 2 daughters from memory.

Mrs Donovan died some years back. I think their is still 2 daughters at Moana. But one is a barrister in Greymouth . I think her first name is Nicki.
