An opera house in Greymouth...that's awesome to know that this lil ole town had some class way back then. ...now days its hard to find anywhere that stays put entertainment wise....yawn. Lol
Hiria Apanui
They wouldn't of had to pay Maori rates back then either ...???
Brian McIntyre
Notice the street light suspended across the street
Hiria Apanui

'Beaths'!! Goodness me, haven't heard that name in years!
Gavin Whitcombe
wow thats a kool pic, wish we lived alot longer so we could see the changes over the years...
Roger Howell
Would the town hall be where the Westpower office is?
Brian McIntyre
Don't wish it away Gavin Whitcombe it will go so much faster as you get older then you will wonder where the hell it all went. A man told me one day that our genes have nothing to do with how long we live..............It is more to do with how many birthdays we have
June Griggs
Roger, I think it was more the towards Albert St area.
Brian McIntyre
The Town Hall was on the corner of Albert and Mackay Sts and west to, is it Tarapuhi Sts and the Holy trinity Church took up the rest of the block behind it
Brenda Barry Brown
Grey Electric Power Board was opposite Woolworths and Mckenzies Roger.
Roger Howell
I assumed Beaths became Millers or Ashby Berghs. Thanks Brian, got my bearings now.
Brian McIntyre
Millers and Ashby Bergs were across the other side of Tainui St on Mackay St Roger Howell
Roger Howell
Yep your comments cleared the fog Brian.
Brenda Barry Brown

George Gardner
Heather, do you have an approx date for this pic?
Judith Cossar
Beaths remained Beaths, do you have dates about the Millers or Ashby Bergs???
Sue Scott
Judith Cossar a friend of my mums worked at Ashby Bergs and we used to visit her there when in town early late 50s early 60s before I started school
Geoffrey King
Who writes the spiel for these postings / photographs. Millers was on the Quay and Ashby Bergs the eastern end of Mackay Street. Now where near Beaths before or after.
Sue Scott
millers and ashby bergs were up the other end of mackay street and both went through to mawhera qy. think Miller's was between Woolworths and Mackenzie's. I think Beaths had one of those vacuum things where your money went up to cashier in containers and yr change cane back. I was only very young so stand to be corrected by more knowledgable
Janice Oconnor
Sue Scott wasn’t that Timosons
Sue Scott
Janice Oconnor I dont remember sorry but you are probably right I'll ask mum tonight she has a great memory at 93
Janice Oconnor
Sue Scott I’ve spelt it wrong tho
Christopher Morresey
Janice Ocoor Timones was in Tainui St
Pete Hines
Building on left hand side is probably Duncan Hardie (due to come down early next year) with next one being Broadcasting House recently demolished
Carolyn Luck
Beaths never became anything else.
It was only Beaths
Sue Scott
I've just chatted to mum about this. She said Beaths was in the building that was later renamed Duncan Hardies when they went in there. Beaths was a big shop, many departments, drapery, expensive ready made clothing, underwear, accessories etc. Timmons was around in Tainui street, along where Seven penny is now towards Mackay Street Corner . It was a small drapers shop and she doesn't think it had remade clothes. Millars was between Woolworths and McKenzies and went right through from Mackay st to Mawhera Qy. Ashby Bergs was on the railway station side of McKenzies probably where Ellery's are now and it went right though as well. From Mary Hines... hope I remember what she told correctly.
Geoffrey King
Sue Scott Who is the 'They' that went in there (Beaths building) Sue? Beaths closed the doors from memory in the 60's ? The building was purchased by Duncan Hardie (Ida Steet) and after the earthquake of 68 it was strengthened, as were many of those two storied brick buildings in the CBD. EQC paid for the repair and strengthening work. He then had his name etched on the front parapet 'DUNCAN HARDIE (BUILDING)'. Beaths closed and the shop was divided up into smaller separate shops. Kitchingham (cycles) was one who moved from the Quay.
Sue Scott
Geoffrey King I thought mum meant Duncan Hardies which i thought must been a business but obviously I got it wrong. I'll will delete my answers and perhaps you could clarify it fully for everyone.

Geoffrey King
Sue Scott no do not delete that even throws more confusion to the wind.
Anna Panther
Geoffrey King one of those shops was Jonelle Gifts! OMG it was a beautiful shop & the most delightful owner- sadly I can’t remember her name! It was in where the Bonzai (now closed) was although the Bonzai expanded - those beautiful leadlight windows will go when the building gets demolished
Anna Panther
Sue, I think Ashley Bergs was where Robert Harris is now
Geoffrey King
Anna Panther where Ellerys / bookshop is now, me thinks. Robt Francis (music) was where Robt Harris is now,
Rob Absalom
Geoffrey King the writer says that Millers was between Woolworths and McKenzies. Beath's, was in the building that housed Kitchingham Cycles, and others. I bought my first bike from them.
Geoffrey King
Rob Absalom Rob read the original script under the Photo which has been changed by Sue Scott since I first commented today. It stated thus 'Beaths became Millers or Ashby Bergs', and as I pointed out was totally wrong, follow what I wrote. It is unfortunate that people do not get things correct. This is a history page and we need to get the situation as correct as we can. we are not rewriting the history.
Rob Absalom
Geoffrey King sorry mate. I can't see that on my post. However, if so, you are correct.
Stephen Tvrdeic
Rob Absalom Here’s a colourised postcard, showing Beaths etc, dated 1953 on the back
May be an image of outdoors
Rob Absalom
Stephen Tvrdeic yep, right next to the radio building. Across Albert St was Trumans. My aunty, Nora Hornsby, worked there for years.

You can plainly see Beaths on the left in the photo. It's opposite the town hall where the library is now.
