I learned from some of my now passed old friends that the coal seams in NZ were much thicker than what these boys would have been used to in the old country they would be laying on their sides hewing Two foot seams I could never imagine that the Brunner mine would be easier workings but at least they could have stood up and worked I believe that the average depth of the seam in Dobson was 13 feet
