Boarding house on Chapel Street

About this image
DescriptionHi - doing some research on behalf of a friend and wondered if anyone would remember or know anything about the large house shown directly opposite the old St Patricks church in Chapel street, Greymouth in this c.1915 photo. I believe it was a “12 roomed boarding house” in the late 19th/ early 20th century and was owned by Mr W. H Boase before being bought by a Mr Smith in 1901.
Does anyone on here remember it being there, and roughly, when would it have been demolished ?.

I was looking at my dad's memoirs and found his entry of 1936. He was a student at the Otago School of Mines and to get the practical experience he worked in 1936-37 at the Liverpool state coal mine as a miner.
He said he stayed with the Guerin family on Chapel Street. I don't know if it was this house, I do recall him calling it a boarding house.

Just looking in the West Coast Recollect I found this on the house my Dad stayed in. It was 40 Chapel Street.

Laura Mills Detlaff Nice postcard - yes, that’s the same house opposite the church, as shown in the b & w photo, and almost certainly the property referred to in the 1901 newspaper clipping.

My great uncle, George Ogilvie was a builder. When St Patrick's was being built, no tenders were received for construction of the steeple, so George offered his services. He did it by tying three long ladders together and working from them.
Hazardous to say the least! Not a goer today. George built the Opera House, ant the United Cricket pavilion on the Recreation Ground, among others. He died in Northern France in 1918 of machine gun fire believed to have been fired by Heinrick Himler. That is another long story produced by Andrew Macdonald ( Dr of Military History).

Ian Tennent Good on him - I imagine he would probably be hauled in front of a tribunal these days for inappropriate building practices.

That house was still there a few years ago and still owned by the Smith family.

Carolyn Luck - Very interesting and thanks for that - since mid 1901; a long time.
May be an image of text that says 'Properties still continue to change hands at very satisfactory figures. Messrs H.Ơ ο Harley and ('o yesterday disposed of Mr Boase's residence in Chapel street to Mr Smith, who will take possession next week. We understand Mr Boase intends leaving this district.'
