Disgusting I don’t know what they would have done with it but to bury it and let it leach into the soil is a disgrace.
Gavin Martin
Dorothy Wills Its biodegradable and leaves no residue whatsoever in the soil. The issue with the above is the plastic it is stored in. Had the bait been buried without any packaging there wouldn't have been an issue.
Tom Jones
Gavin Martin really? what's with all the safety gear they wearing? It's banned in most countries! try going to the USA with 1 of those bait's (will be treated as a terrorist), sugar+salt break down in water as well, doesn't mean it's not there because it dissolved?
John Stuart
Gavin Martin actually its on the banned list in USA because its classified as a terrorist weapon, due to it dissolves in water. Has no taste,no odour, no antidote. USA authorities worry that it can be put into Public water supplies.
Richard Evans
Tom Jones assault weapons are banned here in n.z.
But not in america.
Tony Froome
Gavin Martin all lies unlearning all uve been taught is the only way to learn but U are welcome to yr opinion
Gavin Martin
Tony Froome Personal experience over many years. In the 80's we use to mix it by hand without any form of protective clothing. I'm now nudging 70 and in good health. Given the tens of thousands of tons applied where are the environmental issues? The article above is over 20 years old, same era farmers used to bury toxic ag chemical drums. Poisons used in the past were far worse ie Strychnine, Phosphorus, those you easily die from. Same with cyanide used to harvest possum skins.
Tony Froome
Gavin Martin happy U are healthy any reason the rest of the world banned it as a chemical warfare agent then Americans dropped it in veitm
Gavin Martin
Tony Froome Quite simply because NZ doesn't have natural enemies to control introduced predators. What I find amusing is the people that say 'it kills everything' yet here we are 50 years later with healthy bird populations, plenty of deer to hunt etc. It does kill the odd non target species ie Kea but saves far more than it will ever kill. Environmentally it is very safe. People are ill informed and paranoid. It used to be mainly hunters that were against it but with deer numbers at an all time high they can't win that argument. Don't get me wrong in the article it should have been disposed far better but no different to the pcp clean ups in forestry. We live in a different era now.
Trevor Taylor
Tony Froome So your saying the Yanks dropped 1080 in the Vietnam war ???

Phil Olson
Note all the protective gear they're wearing. Yet they loaded all this dumped 1080 on a truck then transported it to Canterbury in the pouring rain leaving a tell tail green trail in many places along SH73
Anne Milligan
Phil Olson yip, a lot along the kumara straight & through kumara township.

Dump sites at serpentine & dillman town.
Sarah Ashby
How's all those involved health?
Margaret Standen
It was a sinister poison then and still is. Should be banned like almost all counties in the world. New Zealand and Australia being the standouts still using it.
Tony Froome
Margaret Standen correct
Marilyn Corson

Trevor Grant

Pisses me off, I can well imagine there are many more dump sites filled with 1080 around the country. Its time the 1080 gravy train was derailed and DOC and their poison loving mates held to account.
John Webster
if its not so bad, why are them dudes wearing full protection, asking for a friend.
Christine Banks
Perhaps they could just dump it into our water supplies given it has fluoride in it, save buying it . Those dead possums must have good teeth
Katie Earnshaw
Any body know exactly where it was dumped?
Merv Fleming
Remember this, and TWF carted it to chch , they had a green trail following the truck, it made the paper
Christine Fisher
It's a poison and they are wearing protective gear..!!! Where is the whenua protection and why is the drops still going on?? Land contamination in a big scale..needs to stop now!°
Dennis Gibbs
Some people just didn't realise.
Michael Rose
Burial is one perfectly sage way to get rid of lethal fluoride
Des Madgwick West Coaster
I can tell you of a site near Hokitika where they mixed the 1080 and then mixed it with carrots then it was trucked to the plane for aerial drop. I can also pinpoint a place where they had a large pit that was filled with Creosote to treat fence posts, it was later just filled in but was operating for years.
