Can't answer your question. However, the council should have a map of the cemetery with who is buried where, if you are wanting to know where your relative is buried.

I have just found a plot in a Mt somers cemetery through find a plot I think maybe try googling it or hokitika cemetery plots you might get a number

From memory this was a decision by the Borough Council and the "Parks" Dept in the late 1970s. It was permissible as there had been no burials in that part of the cemetary for 100 years and was fairly run down. I would hope that such destruction would not take place in the future but not sure of the law. After this was done and when brother Baz and I became interested in the family history we found out there was a lot of out family buried there. With the help of (now more enlighted) staff at the cemetry it was possible to locate the site of the graves and the family laid a grave stone there at a reunion in 2017. The work was also done quite poorly and you can still see the headstones etc were just pushed over the edge of the cliff - again I would hope this would also not be permitted now!

Robert McMillan Thank you for the information. I am sorry that this has also happened to your loved ones. And like you want to honour the memory by having a memorial stone placed even if it has to be on the boundary.
Another side of the family, Hearns are in the old section at Beswick Rd end with the headstone missing so will also have one put in place there.

Angela McVicar You should be able to get the record of the actual grave site and we had a flat plaque made (about 50mm thick) and on the spot just dug a space for it so it was level with grass. That way it will not interfere with the mowing but remains there for all to view when walking over the area. Good luck with your efforts - it was well worth it for us.
