May ,I found out there are hundreds of Mouats From the Shetlands There is a very good site'' Shetland Geneology'' that lists everyone by name But be prepared to be lead down a rabbit hole lol On our family tree 5 generations Margaret Mouat Is Motherless /Unknown

Carrol Hunter I looked back through the family and I could only find a Margaret way back. But they are probably all related as the Shetlands aren't that big.

Melanie Ramsden I dont know Melanie. As in most Scot families There is always a John ,James, Alexander. Robert .in every generation It is very hard to work it out .Mouat and Hunter was a very common surname We had a James 5 generations back

There's a historical reason for so many Mouat and Shetlander descendants in NZ. In my Hist of the West Coast I wrote: To the north of Charleston ,the beach-working claims were bought up by to Shetlanders from the island of Unst. In true clannish fashion, Magnus Mouat and Gilbert Haper set out to build close-knit community. They sent for their countrymen, some of whom were diggers on the Victorian gold fields. Others they recruited from their home island in the Shetlands. Magnus Mouat even returned there to find a bride.

By the late 1870s, the Shetlander families - Mouats, Harpers, Hendersons, Sutherlands, Laurensons, and Johnsons - were said to number in the hundreds. All were from the island of Unst.
