Grandad Gordy Ladner was a "Cousin Jack." He was a young tin miner in Cornwall when he joined up for WWI. Fortunately he survived the war. The so-called "land fit for heroes" was a big disappointment and for work he left for NZ. He worked on one of the NI main trunk railway tunnels, and then the Otira tunnel before he came to the West Coast, first mining at Denniston, then Waiuta and later Big River.

There were quite a few Cornish miners and their families in Blacks Point and Reefton. Seems they stuck together in friendships, as you do, over the years. I can remember as a small kid visiting with mum and Granny Ladner to some of the other Cousin Jack families.

Wonderful photo. My mother born Globe Hill 1914. Parents at Cornish Town Jack & Nell Askew - she died in 1918 in the Spanish Flu epidemic. Both buried at Reefton. Found a few remnants of pottery, glass etc up there in 2000 before the open cut mine. thanks to the McKay boys!
