DescriptionThe box on the bicycle transported 20 dozen eggs at a time. Miss Craig wheeled the eggs to the Matai Railway Station bound for Mr Brown's Grocery store in Greymouth.

I have a very similar bike to that one which my grandmother bought new in 1908. It has the many holes in the rear mudguard for the now-long-gone skirt guard, though whether it ever had a chain guard I can't say. Having ridden it I can assure you that the frame, having no top tube, is not very rigid. It has the letters EARL in the front chain sprocket. I think that due to the length of the woman's skirt that the photo above may have been taken before 1920.

Carnerd Mark when I was 16 bikes were not cool. But my grandmother had kept my uncle's bike after he was killed in WW2. I started to use it as it was in perfect condition and with the original old paint work and patina it was a COOL bike and I was getting lots of admiring glances and envious comments. Imagine my horror when I got home from school one afternoon to find my mother had painted the clothe line silver and then with the left over paint , painted my COOL bike silver too. I never rode it again,

Craig Norman When I was at high school in the 1960s I rode a 1920s Austral Star bike that had belonged to my grandmother's uncle. It had 28" wheels and had a distinctive 'bent' top bar. I put a lot of miles on it and over the years almost everything except the frame was replaced at various times. Unfortunately about 10-15 years later it was lent to an employee who went home on it one day and never came back. My grandmother's bike has been poorly repainted unfortunately but at least it has survived.

I feel this is not Auntie Jessie in the photo but Auntie Margaret
Auntie Jessie had blonde curly hair

She pushed the bike(they were heavy) because of danger of her dress being caught in the rear wheel spokes.The rear has spokes attached to the mudguard and axle but the safety cover is missing .
