My memory tells me that the cover design/painting is by Isabel Baird. She and husband Matt owned the "School Store" in Hampden Street.

Glenn Johnston I was just about to ask if anyone knew who designed it Definitely seems to be initialed JB or IB if you look closer.

I've tracked down a copy. The cover is Isabel Baird's work. I note my uncle P Goodfellow, builder advertises in it. (Three generations of Goodfellows were builders in Hokitika spanning around 100 years and Percy was the last). Relation Gordon Oliver has a large add for his shoe store in this Centennial publication.

Is there any reference in it to Henry Andrew Gordon and his family? He was there at that time. It looks like a fascinating Document.

It reproduces coverage of events by the Hokitika Guardian stable of newspapers 1865 - 1965 plus has quite a lot of contemporary advertising from 1965. It has a very distinctive and appropriate cover showing under a sunny sky the pioneer statue, town clock, the road - rail bridge, an airplane, native logs on a truck, farming, gold, housing, the river and mountains plus the local canon. One truck has cream cans on board? and there is the ubiquitous flax bush. Isabel was probably wondering how she could depict whitebait and jade (pounamu) as well but left them off. IMO a great effort artistically and symbolically.
