My great grandfather, Edmond (Eddy) Stratford was a co-owner of the Stratford & Blair (S&B) mills. (His father was Edmond Stratford, and his son — my grandfather was also Edmond Stratford, obviously a family name)
During the Great Depression of 1929 through the mid 1930’s, the timber business dried up, no-one was building much. Rather than lay his workers off at the mills, he built the Holy City, and gave some of his employees low-rent accomodations.
I never knew my great grandfather, he died when I was very young, but I recall his wife (my great-grandmother) Catherine Stratford (nee Blewman). We visited her often, I recall her house has very high ceilings, was very dark inside, and the houses were like “row houses”, very close together. A fire in one of them would have taken the lot of them out, I imagine.
My grandfather Edmond Stratford and his wife Emma (nee Quick) lived on Eason’s Hill, at 87 Alexander Street.
Bruce Knight
A photo of the two Edmond Stratfords with other mill workers.
Back row far left (there’s some exposure damage to the film) is my grandfather Edmond Stratford III. Second from right, with the hat and beard / mustache is Edmond Stratford II (my great grandfather) who built the Holy City. Taken around 1900.
