Sport was limited by a lack of flat ground. Children would go down to the station to play cricket, and some of the bachers would play along the backshunt on Sundays. For a game of football they had to walk all the way up to a field above Siberia, but depite that Rewanui had some good soccer teams with so many British and continentals. About the only other outside facility was the Italians' bowling green made of ashes.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn

Not far from Orange Hut. I've been to this area many times. Some single men's huts were only about 10 mins down the hill but other settlements were further away. I'm sure we have commented on this photo before but previous comments are erased or being hidden.

Not sure about this being the highest altitude sports field in NZ. The altitude of the former sports field site would be approx 560m and is definitely less than 700m in altitude. Still a great effort from the miners though considering it was some distance walking uphill from where they lived.

Glenn Johnston highest field in NZ is in Waiouru over 800meters. Very firm, a real bone breaker.

Glenn Johnston it may have been the highest in 1900-ish but by 1940 Waiouru camp at over 800m had plenty of sports fields. There may have been others of course.

Glenn Johnston The street sign on SH1 through Waiouru says it is 814 m ASL so the army sports fields would have been that. It is possible the field at Irirangi, a few km south of Waiouru was higher but in absence of any data to say one way or the other, on behalf of the navy, I'm happy to call it a draw.

I remember my Dad coming home with skinned knees after hockey matches on Denniston when we lived there, but where the sports field was I can't remember. It was more shale than soil, I believe.
