I remember converting the exhange from mechanical switching to a Fujitu Fibre Optic system, hosted directly off Hokitika exchange around the late 1980's. Fibre Optic was supposed to immune to lightening. Around the first Christmas after cutover there was an intense lightening storm which melted around 400m of the fibre cable even though it was buried underground. If memory serves correct some cattle also perished in the same strike.

Note on back of file print reads "Kowhitirangi RAX. - cut over 8 Feb 1954. Approx 15 miles inland from Hokitika. Prefabricated [M?]AX building.
