DescriptionNEED ADVICE RE TRACTION ENGINE MADE BY DAVID AULD OF GREYMOUTH.
I am looking for the special oil it says in the paper about this traction engine it was made by David Auld in Greymouth,. Would you know where I can buy it? My husband bought the engine for our son many years ago but my husband passed away end of November, so I like to pass this on to his son but would like it in working order. Hopefully you might be able to help I see its also lost it fan belt.
Thank you

I would say it would have been like a white mineral spirits like sewing machine oil. Or if possible take it to dispatch or hose and hydrolics and they might be able to help.

I've got one of these, it's a Fairly heavy oil, I'd say a gear oil, but really anything will do. And the drive belt can be replaced with a rubber band
Alistair Mclean this is the one I have

Margaret Turner -An old school engineering firm or contact steam group like motat or Glenbrook should be able to help you.The drive belts were just a heavy duty Rubber band.If you dont have any luck Margaret send me a message and I will check out locally for you.David supplied a small jar of oil with each model made.David spent many years developing his Models-made all his own plant, tools, jigs, drilling guides etc-cast the flywheels-great experience for a young kid learning skills from a Master Engineer.also made copper jewelery rings ,bracelets-acid etched copper to get different shapes/lines etc-made a kiln for enameling different colours into the copper.lots of learning along the way.I still have a steam roller and stationary engine.
Garry Jackson thank you I known we had the oil but since my husband passed away last November I have hunted high and low for this oil.My son and his dad loved playing with this steam engine i contact motat its nearest than Glenbrook.

I love mine! I’ll be 52 this year and I think I got mine for my 6th birthday? The oil canister is sitting on the wheel. I can’t see any specs but it’s very thick and tacky. Experiment with different size rubber bands for the drive belt
Murray Webber
That takes me back a few years, I used to help make these when he got a lot of orders
Mahana Coulston
They look cool can ya show them working please
Wayne Morris
Ask the team at Shanty town, they will help.
Leonie Roberts
Diane Claydon Claydon do you know which oil?
Lawrence Boul
It's very similar to a Mammod. I just used 3 in 1 oil for mine. You can buy drive belts online. O rings would probably work. I'm not sure rubber bands would be strong enough.
Peter Mitchell
Alec Birch , any suggestions

Steam cylinder oil, usually a vegetable oil 600 or 680W grade, it emulsifies in the steam instead of making a gooey white mess. If you do get some of the serious product, for gods sake dont get it on your clothing or the carpet it takes multiple hot washings to remove it. KemTek in Timaru have small bottles for modelers, or that Mamod product looks good. It's what creates that special steam engine smell.
