DescriptionThe parish Priest of Hokitika, Fr Aime Martin SM, started looking for three or four Sisters to staff Catholic schools. Bishop Redwood telegraphed him saying,"Folly to attempt a foundation with four or five Sisters, therefore either ten or none.." There was a response from St Xavier's Convent in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. The eight professed Sisters of mercy with two postulants arrived in Hokitika at midnight 15 October 1878.Date of Photo1878Map^[1]ContributorClare Pierson

How ever did they keep all those white starched bibs looking neat for 100+ days at sea? On a sailing ship, with no washing machine and no hot water? And just a hunk of carbolic soap?
