Thanks for that. My ancestors are buried in the Kumara cemetery as per your map and one of them had a pub in Golsborough and until now I had no idea where that was. Now have a rough idea and a start point
Margaret Riordan
David Perry If you travel through Kumara towards Otira, then turn to the right just past Dillmanstown towards Callaghans, then follow the road around, you will come to Goldsborough.
David Perry
Margaret Riordan Thanks for that - will do!
Margaret Riordan
David Perry I see a map here that shows Goldsborough and Kumara. https://mapcarta.com/24770944 There is a road marked through from Kumara Cemetery (as well as the road off past Dillmanstown), but I know there is a sign warning against going on that road as it isn't maintained. Locals could tell you more.

I grew up in Hokitika and my nana was Lizzie Wallace and I can remember when I was quite young visiting with her and mum a place that was on the right hand side of the main road going out of Kumara just before the turnoff to Dillmanstown but I don’t know who lived there. Can you shed any light on who maybe lived there

Margaret Martin I am thinking that might have been Boundary Rd. Was it a short road that went up a hill? At the top of the hill there used to be two houses, and my understanding is that Johanna Payn lived in one, and Nellie Baretta lived in the other. They were both Scettrini sisters. Johanna Payn was the mother of Lizzie Wallace née Payn and also of my grandmother Rose Lalor née Payn. I am attaching a photo of the one house that is left up there that has now been renovated. I suspect this might have been the Baretta House, but this is something I have to ask about.

On the right hand side next to this house is an overgrown section- I think the house has gone but can't be certain. I think this might have been where Johanna Payn lived. Behind this section is where the Larrikins Track part of the West Coast Cycle track goes through.
Margaret Riordan
The cousin I mean to contact about this to ask is Karen Perryman Karen, do you know about the house that has been renovated? Was this Nellie Baretta's house? And was Johanna's on the overgrown section? My Uncle Jack Lalor took me up here to see the old house up here before it was renovated, but I can't recall which house he said it was.

Margaret Martin Right behind the overgrown section on Boundary Rd are these signs on the West Coast cycle trail. It's where you can walk/cycle back down to Kumara, or you can walk/cycle on the Larrikins Track through to where you join the road that you can take down to Goldsborough and Stafford.

Margaret Riordan the house that is renovated was where my grandfather lived (Fred Baretta ) so it was a scettrini house he married ellen. i think there might have been three houses up on the hill i remember frankie i think he might have been a payn we use to pull the corks he had in his water tanks and get chased. out the back where the thompsons i remember david, don't think he liked us kids (ratbags) we were.
Karen Perryman
the road from the back of these houses my father put in a track with the dozer that joined onto the road that run off the front of the state school and went along to fork in the road that straight ahead went to Dillmanstown and the other went to larrikins this road must of joined onto the one that went past the cemetery. Rosie and Joe,s house was across the road from where you turn off to the londonary rock where it was where the old road went through i think i have remembered it alright
Margaret Riordan
Thank you so much Karen. I thought you would know. I suspected the renovated house would be the Barretta one. I wasn’t quite brave enough to poke around too much on the overgrown property to see if any remains of a house were there.
Margaret Riordan
Karen Perryman I know someone told me- I think it was Uncle Jack but it might have been Maurice- that Johanna and Ellen used to talk to each over the fence between their two houses.
Karen Perryman
the remains of the houses are gone nothing left been over forty yrs now we grew up with grandad mum and dad and six kids in that house
Karen Perryman
Margaret Riordan i havent been up there for years now it will be all overgrown my brother was the last one to live in the house then it was sold not sure who brought it the ones at the pub may know they brought up a few houses in kumara the one at the bottom of the hill burridges house i owned for a few yrs they brought that one and done it up .
Margaret Riordan
Karen Perryman There was another Frank- Francis Davis Payn born 1908, and named after his father. He was the youngest child in the Payn family. He died in 1960, and his death registration says he lived in Boundary Street, Kumara. He wasn't married, and is buried in Karoro Cemetery in Greymouth.
Karen Perryman
Margaret Riordan I know i was young when we let the water out of his tank he never chased as as he usually did mum or grandad went and checked to see if he was ok and found that he had died think it was a heart attack i could have that completely wrong i was young at the time
Frank Neame

Margaret Riordan
I met Doug and Myra Barron at the Payn Scettrini reunion we had in the early 90s. I think I have just spotted you as one of my DNA matches
Karen Perryman
Allan Barron are you married to maudie? if so i worked with her at seaview hospital and i am a great grandaughter of Ellen (nellie) scettrini.
Frank Neame
The road you have kumara cemetery on went through past the cemetery and joined the road to goldsborough in the late 1700s and early 1900s that was the road to hokitika before kumara and dillmans exisyed
Bev Jones
Leonie Roberts - more Scettrini family

This is where the West Coast cycle trail emerges off Tramway Rd into Kumara. The house you can see in the background is the house my grandparents, James Joseph Lalor and Rose Payn lived in, then it became my Uncle Jack's house.

Margaret Riordan this is in greenstone road the river end at the end of the road was a road to greenstone and i think the old tram road joined that. we used to walk along it as kids. remember bobby and jack living there then,
Margaret Riordan
When I carried on along the road to where Goldsborough was, I checked out where I thought Big Dam Hill was, where the Scettrini family first lived before they moved to Kumara. I had found what looked like a walking track on a map up to Big Dam Hill. However, when I got there I found that there were mining operations and I was unable to go exploring. However, these photos show the general area where Big Dam Hill was, I think!
Megan Payn
Shame Joe and Allan are no longer with us, I'm not sure what happened to all uncle maurice's family history stuff! I believe the Payn family home that my granddad grew up in was up towards the water res!
Lynette Clunie
Megan Payn I remember their house, going there as little kids before they moved to Nelson.
