Beautiful as is now: Old Rimu would have been a noisy, unsanitary, disease ridden , wet ,isolated, dangerous place were a nights decent rain might mean being trapped for days, living in a log walled canvas covered hut, or tent if just a newbie, no toilet, no washing, working in the gold mine.

My grandmother Violet Zealandia Atkinson new Surgenor was born in the late 1800’s and her extended family members lived there until fairly recent years
Even my mother Peg spent time living up there with her uncle and Aunty in the early 1940’s
