That road is still there too. Runs up the other side of the ridge pops out near the bend before the really steep part at the top. Walked up it a couple times. Definitely a different kind of human around then. Extremely hardy people.

Photo shows the current (more or less) route I think? There is an old route, but I don't think this is it.

Lawrence Boul yes the photo shows basically what the highway is now. Just a few more rocks removed and a cliff face cut back

It pops out on the corner where u can see both sides of porter's pass ridge. The old road is now a doc track next time ur going ova have a look it's well worth the walk. Plus it's history
