DescriptionThe uniformed Richard (Dick) John Spotswood Seddon (29.5.1881 - 21.8.1918) was killed in France at the very end of WW1. He is buried in the military cemetery at Hebuterne in northern France.

His younger brother, Thomas Edward Youd Seddon (Tom) (2.7.1884 - 22.1.1972) was 22 years old when his father died, and Tom became the serving MP for Westland from 1906-1928. He enlisted in 1914, trained in 1915, joined the 9th Reinforcements of the NZEF and sailed on the Maunganui to Egypt. He was at the battlefront at Paschendale and Ypres, and in May 1918 went to the USA on a fund-raising tour. He was a serving MP throughout the rest of the war. After being ousted as an MP in 1928 he moved to Wellington and served as Chair of the War Pensions Board.
The youngest brother, John Stuart Spotswood Seddon (1887-1969) was the first of the brothers to enlist, serving first in Fiji and Samoa before joining the British Army and fighting in the Somme and Italy as an artillery man. He survived the war, and after hospitalisation in the UK returned to Wellington to live with his mother in Thorndon, Wellington. Life wasn't easy for him, he suffered from 'war strain' and in the early 1920s was taken to Ashburn Hall (a private psychiatric hospital). He was well looked after, played golf with the Superintendent of the hospital and took day trips to Warrington and Seacliff. He remained in Dunedin until his death in 1969.
Dick is memorialised on the Cenotaph in Hokitika and also on his father's monument in Wellington.Map^[1]ContributorDavid Verrall
