That brings back some memories, my grandfather Bags Byrne worked at the Gas Works, you can see the big round storage tanks bottom left and the building next door, they used to live at 13 Preston Road which is visible to the right of the grandstand (over the small lagoon) they were about the middle of those 8 or 10 houses - they used to get flooded quite badly - the carpets were only tacked down in doorways and the corners, and when a flood was on the way, we would rush down and pack everything, carpets and everything 2 beer crates high - once this was not enough and the whole lot was stuffed - soon after they moved out. he also shaped at the racetrack as well.
Sandra Arnott

Anne Honey mum was his cook around the late 1960s. He had a cat named Ambrose, and mum often prepared the cat a home made stew. Us kids helped clean the church after weddings, maybe yours as well. Every week I polished the brass eagle with brasso, a metal polish, this was my favourite chore. The song of the day was 'Lily the Pink' on the radio, we often sang this as we worked. Late Saturday afternoons we swept up the wedding confetti.
Anne Honey
Elizabeth Betty Woods He was a lovely man. When my grandmother died i walked in to say goodbye and he was praying at her side. Thank you for sharing your memories.

Remembering so much in this photo ; Dixon Park , Grey Main school, Holy Trinity , our old house in Tainui st , tennis courts , sawyers creek , etc etc

The main block of our school, Grey Main, was badly damaged in the Inangahua earthquake of May 1968. Mum sent us to school that day. I recall walking up a severely cracked ramp. The main block was knocked down soon after, and we moved into prefabs (facing the railway yards). I recall a ball and chain being used by Cooks, a Christchurch company, to knock it down (someone might be able to confirm this). I was around 9yrs of age. We weren't aware of the severity of the quake...
Lyn Gosling
Grey High School with sports field in the distance.
Rod Berry
