DescriptionHokitika entrance and river (ca 1870) from Capt Max Dowell QSM collection - for his love of Hokitika Port and Shipping. New Zealand artist. Husband of Caroline Frederica Liardet (1799-1882). Went to Australia in 1839, settling in Victoria. He was the first man to convey mails to and from the ships which arrived from England. In 1842 he purchased a run at Mount Macedon. Founder of Sandridge. First visit to New Zealand was in 1845, when he came to visit Captain Francis Liardet, who was in command of H.M.S. Powerful, stationed at Taranaki. He returned to Victoria, but came back to settle in New Zealand about 1863. See Evening Post Obituary (22nd March 1878, p2, col. 4). W.F.E. Liardet artist inscribes: View of Hokatiki Entrance to the River Hokatiki. Distant view of Mt Cook 40 m from coast, 30 m from Hokatiki, 14000 F, seen 100 m on clear day. S. spit dirty gray colour headland of the shore timbered opposite of the low land densely timbered. Mt Cook gully steep and hazy. The ocean rolls in with fearful surges and has carried away great parts of the township always in danger. The black birch timber grows (text ends here. in ink, in the hand of the artist).
