My neighbour Albert Rawlings let me snap a photo of his framed copy of the Hokitika District High School 1st XV rugby team from 1947. Charlie Nightingale who is also in the photo is another survivor from this team of seventy-six years ago.

I remember a smattering of these men from my youth including Albert though they are 25+ years older than me. At one stage whilst working for the Forest Service Barry (Barney) Ross was my boss. He played a lot of representative rugby for West Coast.
Ying Louis whom I met in the North Island once was a lifelong friend of my uncle. Back in the 1940's it would have been unusual but not unique for someone of wholly Chinese descent to play 1st XV rugby!
