Great Uncle William (Bill) Stephen fought the Boers and returned to the Coast afterwards. Last night I watched the sunset next to the Mokihinui River that ultimately claimed his life while rafting logs downstream.

My Grandfather , Malcolm McFadyen would be in there , the Doctor in Kanerie gave him a horse and took it to Lyttelton and onto a ship called KNIGHTS TEMPLAR and sailed to Transval , South Africa , Service No. 802 ,3rd Contingent , No 5 Company , Mounted Rifles ( Rough Riders )
The horse got shot but survived, Grandad had the bullet put on a chain , Duncan's got it now , and when they sailed back to NZ he left the horse and gave it to some villagers who used to give him chaff for it .
