Well, I'll be darned! I was born and raised there, and spent half my life at Lake Kaniere, and never knew about that at all! What a surprise!

When we were young teens in 1967 we brought our bikes and ourselves over from CHCH on the railcar to my dad's cottage (previously Dorkey's house) at Awatuna and then next day biked from Awatuna to Lake Kaniere (about 28 miles) and camped beside the lake for a night. We caught a perch in the lake that evening using a trout lure. The mossies drove us crazy that night, as our 'tent' was just an open, canvas flysheet. And then the rain began.... We couldn't get out of there fast enough when daylight arrived. We biked through the rain, very fast all the way back to Awatuna and got a fire going inside and dried ourselves and our gear out. Then we wandered up the road a short way to old Tom Kelly's place and chatted to him about our adventure.
