We used to travel to Ch Ch on these dad was a guard on them so some of us used to go up the front with the driver bit spoiled. But bloody hell it was scary when vehicles were approaching crossings and you would wonder if they were going to stop or not. Then it would hit a possum and the noise was so loud.

Those old Vulcans were actually quite a luxury machine for their time huge swallow you up leather seats that could turn 360 degrees depending on which direction you where travelling covered many a mile in them and the Fiats

Had many trips in these railcars in the 1950's between my hometown (Greymouth) and ChCh. I found them "smoother" than the steam train express for some reason and really enjoyed the trip. I think I remember the return ticket costing either 7/6 pence or 12/6 pence which is 75c and $1.25 today. Haha, that would'nt buy an apple these days. Now I think they are asking $200 one way. WTF ??????????

I used to go with my grandma to the West Coast for holidays when I was very young. The whole journey took almost a day. I remember the railcar and Ikamatua, cups of tea and packets of chocolate wheaten biscuits. Such lovely memories
