Description20-year-old Kevin Molloy, from Kotuku, was called up for Military Service in 1940. He was sent to Waiouru Military Camp for training. Because of his driving / mechanical ability, he was trained as a Driver / Mechanic.

The first photo shows Kevin beside the Staff Car he drove at Waiouru. Kevin was posted to Egypt and Italy. The second photo shows Kevin in Italy sitting up in his truck. My Dad was a driver in Egypt also. From what I know he drove the bigger trucks too. Possible machinery and tankers etc.

Would have been a hot, difficult and dangerous job. The supply lines were favoured targets of the Luftwaffe and Rommel's flanking attacks.

dad was in action in italy .at the battle of cassino he was one of the RNZASCammo truck drivers who supplied endless rtonnage of 25pounder gun ammo to the ballied gun batteries bombarding Cassino town in that battles early stages .post war It was revealed the bomba rdmen per square meter was one of the most intensive artillery barrages of ww2.the town was in effect a sea of rubble .dad with a rather sardonic humour quipped -"all that HE on the back and only a tommy gun to defend myself".It was with great pride I wore his duplicate set of War medals and my own military medals on parade today.for years Id often wondered why if Dad first trianed/served in Egypt,he was never awarded the Egypt star .MOD were to put it politely "useless " the answer finally coming from the source of the duplicates and bloke who mounted them.The NZ contingent(dad amongst them) dismebarked at the port of Tripoli some 6 weeks post the battle of El Alemain and were there for training only,prior to the commencement of the Italian campaign.IIRC Therese' has visited the famous Monte Cassino site with other clan folk.Geoffrey another wee question for you ,arising from brians posting .In my collection Ive an entry from the Auckland war memorial museum records showing Dads occupation on en listment as "sawmiller" or is this yet another case of military logic.

Six and a half years of military service and when he was discharged he got paid 146 pound for his efforts. I was just up at Moana tonight and thought to myself how astounded he would have been at the development in the almost sixty years he has been gone.
