That's interesting, when you zoom in on it, it looks as if the Brunner area was in the Buller District.

Pauline Schafer cobden used to be in the nelson district back in the gold rush days.greymouth south came under the canterbury provine.
i read about this in phillip ross mays book the west coast gold fields.

Craig Jarden yes I knew Cobden was, but I thought the dividing line was the river. I suppose with the coal mines going under the river to spread between both sides it was an easy way to define them if they were put in the one province.

It would be great to see it scanned in higher definition. On the full map I can just make out Molloy's Lookout, which is on the road from Kotuku to No Town. Molloy's farm at Kotuku was purchased in several Blocks over a period of time. A closer look at that could give an approximate date.

Colin Waterman. Thanks for that Colin. Blocks 1 and 4 labelled. Other two aren't. No roads shown which dates it about the turn of the century. More maps with higher definition would be great.

Look at all the planned sections other side of hill from cobden heading to runanga, currently farmland, possibly this was drawn in England and they didn't realise what the barber was, be a cold spot for a town.

I'm trying to find somewhere that might be able to scan and print it, be a cool poster or if anyone else would like a copy so if you have any suggestions let me know.

Colin Waterman either the Grey or Regional Councils may be able to, I know the GDC could print full sized maps, not sure if they can scan them. History house or library may be able to help or Grey Star might be able to help, I'd love a copy.

On first reading of the names on the map, I thought that ‘Westland’ had the wrong spelling. Second thoughts remind me that the original explorer and mapmaker of the area called the whole area WESTMORELAND after the English county. Apparently he found the name too long and clumsy so he abbreviated the name - eventually to WESTLAND’. Other people must have chosen their own abbreviation as in the above map. Perhaps he used the above one too.
Will search the reference for the original surveyor. Was it Rochefort?

Yes, John Rochfort called the area between the Buller River and the Grey River by the name Westmoreland, from which Westland was derived.
