DescriptionJack Mosley my Great uncle, with his daughter Judith delivering stores to Waiuta in the early 1950s (possibly after the mine closed). The two older gentleman are presumably locals but don't know who. Jack and his wife Thelma owned one of the general stores at Ikamatua. The first one they had was about where the fire station is and the second is where the current On The Spot store is, which was build in the 1960s after a fire severely damaged the first. Jack used to deliver stores all around the district and visited Waiuta regularly. This is his second truck. The Mosley's had the store into the 1970s. It was Ernie the one I remarked and Hende Hunter in the othe one. Both had Ford delivery trucks and weekly rune up to Mai Mai and all points in between then the next day backroad to Atarua. Jack and later John Burrows had Totara Flat butchery and did the same runs though they used Bedfords. Great service and congenial guys. They would have the Farmers wives in laughter with the outrageous stories and jokes. Forgotten Era now but Great service.

Yes it is Dad and my sister Judith. Probably before I was born. I know dad had a licence to deliver groceries to Waiuta in 1953 that I found when searching Grey evening star public notices a few years ago.
I suspect this would have been around that time.

Correction think Jack was his name. I first arrived at Clayton's 57. So 7 years after this pic taken. Think Waiuta closed 52.

Kevin Oregan Ernie was Jack's older brother (and my grandmother's brother) and was an accountant in Greymouth. Jack and Thelma had the Ikamatua store.

Jack from Ikamatua visited Atarau every Wednesday and Sam Clark from Blackball every Thursday The introduction of the supermarket concept Eg Self help etc changed peoples purchasing habits and slowly these services slowly disappeared

There seemed to be a mutually agreed " patch" for the General store owners: Mr Moffitt - Stillwater , Dad (Frank Martin) - Ahaura and Jack Mosley - Ikamatua. Prior to reaching school age I regularly travelled with Dad on his grocery runs to north of Totara Flat as far as the railway crossing, east to Haupiri and south to Matai. After we moved I don't know if Jack O'Grady carried on with the deliveries. ( a bit off- topic. same theme ... we used to have weekly visits to Ahaura by Pat Fisher with his meat truck from Nelson Creek and Bob Harrington from Greymouth with his fish truck.)
