DescriptionThis tinplate print of an older man, likely taken in the late 1860s in Grey, has been listed for auction this week. I’ve previously posted on similar ones that turned up in Nelson in late 2021. Ferrotypes have a reputation for being terrible quality; they were cheap and used by itinerant photographers because they were quick to process.
This man is likely to be John Miller, father of Harriett Miller Langdon of Maori Gullly and Langdon’s Ferry, taking into consideration the other ferrotypes and photos from the Langdon-Smithers family the business came into in its possession from the same lot.
The same dealer's offerings over the past couple of years have produced photos which were definitely identified as Harriett Miller Langdon, and a wedding photo of Frank Rouse and Mary née Graham's wedding. Mary was Harriett's granddaughter.
The Langdon, Miller and Smithers family have been featured quite a few times in this group, some of Grey’s earliest settlers and pioneers in the truest sense of the word.
The other ferrotypes with it which appear to be from the same session are of a middle aged woman, likely the wife of this man, and a boy a few years old almost certainly John Miller Langdon who later perished in the Brunner Disaster.
I can’t say for sure but it seems logical based on their apparent age that both of these people were John Miller Langdon’s grandparents from either the paternal or maternal side. For reference I have also posted these.
It seems improbable that John Maunder Langdon’s parents ever immigrated to New Zealand, but more likely that Harriet’s parents John Miller and his wife may have, although Miller is a fairly common surname which makes verifying this difficult without any other information.
There were other images from the estate I was unable to identify but in summary, they were also clearly from the same lot that was split up and in part also picked up by a dealer in Christchurch.Map^[1]ContributorDarian Zam
