Now long forgotten, GUS was once one of New Zealand's biggest grocery store chains. I think at their peak they had around 250 stores around the country, in fact as far as I recall these booklets had a map in them showing a lot of the locations of the time. So technically up until the end of the 1940s they were third behind Four Square and Self Help. Of course nobody remembers them at all now. Grocer's United procured an arrangement with Independent Grocer's Association in the U.S. and brought the brand down under, quickly converting all the GUS stores to IGAs. They lasted until around 1972 when they were acquired by Woolworths as a market share and all the locations were converted or closed. IGA didn't make a comeback in New Zealand until the 1990s, via an Australian concern reopening stores here.

Nimmos Store, Bright Street, Cobden was one. They provided really friendly and great service from a modern mini mart style store.

That very same recipe book was on the recipe book shelf of my mother’s kitchen, but of course with a Nimmo’s name on it not Waiuta. As Christine says Nimmo’s was a GUS store until IGA took over. One of the things that always surprised me as an IGA kid was how well the various stores in the association co-operated together. They didn’t really see themselves as competing with each other. For example in Cobden both Abbie’s and Nimmo’s were IGA. Nimmo’s chose hardware as a sidekick to the groceries and Abbie’s had their drapery as their sidekick.
