We used to take our Guy door to door in a wheelbarrow saying.. Penny for the Guy, penny for the Guy, if you haven't got a penny a halfpenny will do.. if you haven't got a halfpenny.. god bless you

I remember my father telling me his parents in Denniston argued about whether a Catholic family should participate in Guy Fawkes night.

Joe Kelly - same here, many in our street were offended - we just saw it as a fun fireworks night - at that young age, no thought was given to the political/ religious implications - -

Peter Spence in the end his Dad (who wasn't a practicing Catholic) won the day by saying 'just let the kids go and have some fun' or something along those lines.
This was era where the Pope got burnt on the bonfire in some places instead of/as well as the Guy, so of course there was anti-Catholic element for some.

A further thought was we were never allowed or wanted to burn a guy - only to enjoy the fireworks with the families gathered on the 5th

Wen we were kids & living in Lake Brunner we use to do the same thing but we had our Guy Fawkes laying on a makeshift stretcher.
