Built in Greymouth in the early 1960,s by the Grey Harbour Board Carpenters, she was built too replace the steam tug KUMEA, Timaru boatbuilder the late Doug Robb set up the keel and the frames, and checked on progress as the building continued over time. There is a sister-ship to the WILLIAM STEER the RAWINIA, built by Doug Robb in Timaru for the then Taranaki Harbour Board, At last report she is now in private ownership up in Northland. The WILLIAM STEER was sold out of here to a new owner in Napier.
