DescriptionMacrocarpa is more tolerant of wind and salt spray than radiata pine, and was the preferred shelter tree for coastal farms. It has spreading branches with dense foliage, so stock can shelter and remain dry under a macrocarpa hedge. Will Savage I remember my cousin the dairy farmer telling me that, also if planted as a hedgerow they drop a lot of litter and you lose a lot of pasture under the spread. Having said that It's a lovely timber for woodworking

Macrocarpa fence lines are a big thing on farms on the Canterbury plains. They are also planted around the houses as weather breaks.
