Description1888-1900-Beach suction dredges: A Wellman suction dredge started on Three Mile Beach, Hokitika, January, 1888. Seven of these operated 1888-1900, when they converted to the bucket type. November, 1891: The Hokitika-Kanieri bucket dredge started river work, followed by four other river dredges up to 1900. The total production of these twelve was only 2,000 to 3,000 ounces in all. 1900-1920-About 100 dredges were active intermittently (upwards of 50 simultaneously), with very little done during World War I. Production 250,000 ounces. 1920-1958: 1,305,420 ounces produced by 35 dredges.
