Judy Wilson We also have one from the Hokitika Exhibition. My husband's maternal grandmother received it from her sister. Beautiful glassware.

This is cheap Carnival glass which were sold at trinkets at Exhibitions around the world. Also known as Ruby glass, in all sorts of shapes and sizes, ashtrays, cups, jugs, glasses, jewellery trays. Usually engraved with a personal message "Mum, from Joan"...etc. Different colours, red, yellow, green etc.

I have the same glass dated 1913/1914

Wouldn't have been made in New Zealand that's for sure. N.Z made tableware manufacture didn't commence until the early 1950's. My guess is that and others like it, would have been sourced from Europe e.g Bohemia, Czechoslovakia etc.

I have one exactly the same with my mother's name, Betty on it on one side. She was born and lived in Dunedin and I always thought it said Dunedin exhibition on it cos that's where she said she got it from. On retrieval I discovered on the other side it says NL+ SS Exhibition 1926. She would have been 6 years old then.
