On 3 December 1926 at 3.00 a.m a deep rumble was
heard from the Dobson Mine mouth, followed by a violent
explosion. This was followed a few seconds later by
another explosion and a tongue of flame.
It was like an earthquake, wakening people all along theBrunner Valley, shaking houses and erupting from both outlets of the colliery. The high structure in front of themain entrance that carried the coal trucks out to the bins was struck by the full force of the explosion, and the trucks
and rails were blown a distance of 400 metres.
The vast cloud of fumes and dust that rose over the
area signified to the residents there had been a disaster at the mine.Map^[1]ContributorTony Kokshoorn

My Dad was at Wallsend at that time and this incident motivated his Union activity. He told me this incident at Dobson was the result of management insisting they mined through an obvious and very stoney fault line, which was an issue at Pike River as well I believe?
