DescriptionMary Trayes...As per GRA, 6/12/1893, Frank Courtney drowned in the Buller River around the start of December 1893 after his canoe overturned and he and his wife were thrown out. She survived. In January 1894 his properties were sold to settle his estate etc. Those who bought the hotel continued to use his name for it for many years.

So that's the top of the buller river, and is that a dredge in picture to? and did they get much gold out of that part of the river?

And I always thought that the "Junction" referred to where the roads meet up at the old pub. Never too old to learn eh!

Thers still remains of a dredge not far upstream from the junction. guessing could be that one Ian Borlase
That's the block our log house is on now .
The hotel was Courtney accommodation house and the owner was Jim Courtney who emigrated here from the USA.
The hill opposite is named Mt Courtney in his honour. He drowned crossing the Buller in a flood . The punt crossed the inangahua River just below the accommodation house and original road went up through inwoods property and emerged behind the inangahua store .
This is pre the railway bridge being built so I'm guessing early 1900s , someone may be able to confirm.most interesting the dredge operating in the main river a practice that would never be permitted these days and obviously never caused any adverse environmental effects as they continually refer to the pristine Buller river ....

Ian Borlase How true...several dredges have worked in the Buller...Fern flat one washed away in flood with lose of life...remains of that dredge spread down the gorge for years after...
