I remember seeing the bigger boats from Cobden in the seventies, while walking to school. By the mid eighties, the smaller boats were harder to see, and I remember thinking that it was a shame to not see the bigger ones.

1988 was the record low season. There were no fish. I think Talleys Westport unloaded less than 30 tonnes. There was heaps of Paranoia about Japanese drift netting destroying the fishery which led to this method being banned. However 1989 the year pictured turned out to be the record high year for the time. That year also changed the way we fished. We started fishing a lot deeper and wider. I skippered Debbie Jane that year. It didn't start good for Basil Larry got hit by a squid boat on the Moata on the first of January and I lost windows in the tail end of cyclone Helga on Debbie on the second lol
