Rewanui building PHOTO ALBUM

DescriptionThis attractive building at Rewanui is situated on the bins backshunt and still exists. Shown here in '74 (John Agnew), '87 (Peter Ross), and '22 (LB). The first time I visited (early 90's) the racks inside were full of wooden patterns for castings.
I'm planning a model based on it so if anyone can share details of what it was for etc I'd be interested. Any pictures (historic or modern) would also be welcome, particularly of the rear and the end with the stairs. I'd also like to talk to anyone venturing up there soon who might run a tape over the building.
I'm not averse to venturing over from Christchurch, but less keen at present than I would be at warmer times of year with longer days.Map^[1]ContributorLawrence Boul

stores building I think. In 1963 Soon after I started on the Roperoad at the bins I was told by dad, who ran the boiler and maitained the machinery at the bins, that I had to go to the stores to get a hard hat, the old type. I asked " have they got a store?" Overhearing this one of the ropeboys said "Yeah Jock get me an Ice cream" and a few others chimed in with requests. No ice creams in it of course or smokes or packets of french letters I am fairly sure thats the buildin. We picked up hats thermos flasks etc. there

Us Rope boys worked on the top floor. On the left the coal arrived on the roperoad then freewheeled, their speed contolled with brake stick. Which were pieces of 2x2 that were placed between the wheels of the tubs. about opposite the last top window was the tumbler which tipped the coal on to a conveyor belt that spread it through the bins. The chute angling down from the top floor on the righ was where tubs of stone were tipped in to the creek. The part of the bins you see in the forground housed the screens. When the screens were operating they almost shook the old bins apart. Good place for a 15 year old to start work.

It is the original stor at Rewanui.l was the storekeeper/ coal consgnor there in the early 1980s.it was still in use then as a drill store
The rail line to Rewanui was compled in 1909.before that everything was taken in by horses on the pack tracks.the store served Rewanui 1. 2 and 3

So you think it was put in around the same time as the original bins? It shares construction style with buildings at middle brake, so that makes sense.

My dad who was engineer up there called it the workshop.

Cyril Hector The original drawings refer to it as the store, but doubtless usage changed over the years.
