Two Catholic Churches were built at Waimangaroa, Buller district. Named Our Lady of Perpetual Help (or referred to as St Mary's). They were built in Elgin Street, where the original Waimangaroa village was not far from Conns Creek. The first building was opened on 4th July 1886, Architect-H. Etevenaux, and the tender of £170 by Messrs Boyle and Gorringe, builders was accepted. it was 46 ft length, 26 ft wide with walls 12ft. with fittings etc added the final cost was £300. In early October 1945 the building was blown completely off its piles. As there were only four families living in the area it was decided to demolish the present building, and re-use the materials to erect a smaller church - 21 ft long, 15 ft wide & 19 feet high, room enough for 40 people. It was rebuilt and painted and ready for service according to the Grey River Argus on 16 April 1946. By 1970 the church had been closed and was finally sol in 1975 to a Mr Schlayer, and turned in to a family home. This is where Elgin Street is sited in Waimangaroa. Away from the busier streets.

My father told me our cousins at Waimangaroa stopped going to mass after the church closed. They felt so attached to the place they didn’t want to go to mass anywhere else.

Ours was nick named Our Lady of Perpetual Agony, referring to the nuns.
