Plenty of visitors went there to Ron Kings claim in the years before Shantytown opened.

Alec Birch it was my great grandfather's Mick Johnson's claim , but yes King used to take tourists there to pan for gold in barrels as they do in shanty town

Tony Johnson Partially correct. The claim was Johnston and Kings Wheel of Fortune claim, permits etc via Westland County paid for by RON. It was set up to cater for the Midland Coach lines educational tours. From that Newmans use to take their coach tours after staying at the Hotel. Nothing to do with Mick. All Mick would do is wash up et the end of the day when he saw Ron pass his house going back to Greymouth

That brings back memories. The Johnson and King gold claim which was on the site of the Helvetia Hotel. I used to bike out there from Hokitika when a school kid and Mick Johnson sometimes let me do gold panning and fossick for old bottles there.

Mick Johnson was the original name on the goldsbourgh claim..
When times were tough old Ron King approached Mick to supply the tourist via a bus tour from the Kings Hotel to Goldsbourgh for Gold panning...at that point Ron King became a 50% owner...when Ron King past on his share passed on to his 2 sons & continued to send the bus tourists out to Goldsbourgh..
When Mick Johnson passed on
The Kings sons approached Mick Johnson's wife Dolly Johnson nee Hibbs to buy out Mick Johnson half share for a very meager sum.
