DescriptionPhoto of William Henry (Bill) Flannagan my second great uncle, and Mary nee Young my second great aunt with their children, taken in 1902.
The Flannagans were in Hokitika from the mid 1860s then Charleston. Mary's family the Youngs arrived in 1888 and they went to Taylorville so the family could work in Brunner mine, then they went to Buller moving around in Westport, Millerton, Deniston, Granity, Hector and Waimangaroa.
Mary's Dad my great great grandfather Thomas Young was the leader of the Granity Coal Miners Union, trustee of the Buller Trades and Labour Council and a representative of Westland Trades & Labour Council.
Bill's sister was Mary Ann Lees who with her husband Andrew were well-known publicans in the West Coast for decades (a few Lees relatives belong to this group).
Bill's brother was the well-known recluse Ted (Tiddly) Flannagan who lived as a hermit up at Charming Creek. I wrote about him here; https://tinyurl.com/3z7fd6r4
He was so notorious locally a poem was written about him. After doing a lot of research on his troubled family it makes sense why he didn't want anything to do with anyone, although out of that branch everyone said Bill was a really nice man so at least one turned out 'right.'.
Children in the portrait from L are Thomas William (1897), Stanley John (1900), Mary Ann Steward (1895), and Bessy (1902). There was one more daughter Isa born 1905.

Photo courtesy of my cousin Tom Flannagan - the family lives on in Greymouth today so nearly 160 years of continuous descent. There are also still Flannagans in Dunedin but they lost an n at some point, now called Flanagan.Map^[1]ContributorDarian Zam
