AddBy: William Gray1st Nov 2023 9:25PMSome more data on the Loch Class Frigates, The HMNZS ROTOITI was the last Loch Class Frigate to work the Port of Greymouth arriving from Auckland on the 11-4-63, and departing for Auckland on the 16-4-63. She was built by Henry Robb Leith Scotland in 1943 as was the PUKAKI. Henry Robb also built several cargo ships for the the Union Co, namely KAITANGATA, KONUI KAITAWA, and many more they also built the MAMAKU and the PURIRI for the Anchor Co. The KANIERE was the first Loch Class Frigate to visit Greymouth arriving on the 30-3-49 from Milford Sound, and departing for Westport on the 2-4-49. All the Frigates saw War Service in the Korean War in the early 1950,s. All the six Frigates were towed to Hong Kong and were broken up in the mid to late 1960,s. Names of the six PUKAKI, TUTIRA, HAWEA, TAUPO ROTOITI and the KANIERE. The KIAMA M353 is one of four minesweepers gifted to NZ by Australia in 1952, the KIAMA visited Greymouth and made two calls here the first on the 16-7-67, and again on the 17-7-71 arriving from Auckland on both visits, the INVERELL also made one call here in 1967. the other two did not call here the ECHUCA, and the STAWELL. All were broken in Auckland over time 1967, 1968, 1977, and 1978. And just as a point of interest the Royal NZ Navy used the name HAWEA on three different vessels.
