DescriptionHi my name is Gary Carter. My grandparents Edith and Albert Carter had a tailoring business in Westport in 1920's. My father Malvern Edward Carter and his brother Clarence Henry Carter were born in Westport in early 1900's. My grandparents left Westport following the 1929 earthquake. My grandfather withdrew his money out of post office just before clock tower collapsed l think at his feet behind him. My grandparents moved their family to New Plymouth where my sister and l were born. I moved to Adelaide in 1981. The house my grandparents built is still standing in Westport. My great grandfather Hugh Jones - my grandmothers father - was manager of bank New South Wales in Westport. Hope this stirs some memories to people in Westport. Gary Carter

Hi Gary - some memories were certainly stirred. Below is a photo of A.E. Carters taken in the early to mid 1920's from my Grandmother's album. My Grandmother, Rene Callaghan (nee Betts) was a tailoress for your Grandfather Bert. In fact your Grandfather made your father Vern her apprentice. She was honoured.
Mum believes your father must have kept in touch with Gran, as in the 1950's he came down from New Plymouth on holiday and ended up making a beautiful 3 piece suit for Gran for a special occasion. We kept the serge suit until the floods 2 years ago went through her old house and ruined it.
In the photo my mother thinks L to R: Vern?, Wattie Phillips, Anne Lee, Rene Betts, Phyllis Carruthers (nee Smith) and Bert Carter. Sorry it's not of better quality.Map^[1]

The house we live in at 4 McIntyre Rd Carters Beach was built by George and Ann Carter (circa 1887). the rail sidings were opposite and junction of branch to West breakwater and on to Westport via Buller Bridge. The area was called Carters Junction for many years and later Carters Beach. The property was sold to Alfred and Annie Ferguson in 1911 when Carter passed on.
