DescriptionHarry Gardner named his alluvial gold claim the ‘Sons of Freedom’, but enlisted two of his daughters to help work it.
Present this day were (from left): Maud and Nellie Gardner, Eric Bradley, Madge Armstrong, Harry Gardner, Joseph Divis, and Doug and Len Armstrong. Many years later, Nellie recalled that it was hard and often cold work – but at least they kept what gold they won, unlike the miners who toiled in the depths of Waiuta's mine for a British-owned company.
