Arthur Bass Down at Greymouth recently ans the signal box is looking in good nick.

Arthur Bass the flood wall was built around it back in 1988 but a few years ago when the flood wall was being raised(?) the box had to go, thankfully it was moved closer to the station and inside the flood wall.

Won't be exchanging the tablet, there was no need for a tablet once inside yard limits so it would be handing back the tablet for the section of line it has just come off.

Paul use to be trained up as a station master at Ferrymead, use to run with a tablet a few times a year, so not only was I driving at times when tablet was in use but also trained up on now to use the tablet machines themselves. It was always interesting the questions you got from the public when using the machine at Ferrymead station as it was in public view.

I can remember when we 3 kids would help Dad in the signal cabin and as a treat we got to wind the tablet out and in .Such great Memories

A fellow schoolboy railway enthusiast and I caught the Press Railcar from CHCH with our bicycles on board during school holidays in 1968. As we were relying on the pocket money from our mum's, there was no budget at all for accomodation. The good natured signalbox chap gave us the go-ahead to doss down in the shed in the foreground of the pic.
Free but uncomfortable, a mattress of railspikes in scrim bags and all the other handy stuff that might be needed one day.
Word must have got around that we were there as a couple of times during the night the tin roof was hit by lumps of coal accurately lobbed from passing locomotives
